The Other Time/El otro tiempo: Aurelio de la Vega and Music/y la Música (2021) is the first bilingual book on Maestro de la Vega´s life and work. It begins with a scholarly introduction followed by three essays by Santí on different pieces; next comes a long interview of the Maestro plus two essays of his on Verdi and Verdi and Wagner. It ends with a long poem-homage by Santí, and detailed chronology and discography. Except for the interview, which appears here in Spanish only, contents are all bilingual. The interviews’s bilingual version appears in a separate book, A Summer Conversation/Conversación de Verano (2025).

El otro tiempo/The Other Time: Aurelio de la Vega y la Música/and Music (2021) es el primer libro bilingüe sobre la vida y obra del Maestro Aurelio de la Vega. Comienza con una introducción académica seguida de tres ensayos de la pluma de Santí sobre distintas obras; a continuación, se incluye una larga entrevista al Maestro y dos ensayos suyos sobre Verdi y Verdi y Wagner. El libro concluye con un largo poema-homenaje de Santí y una cronología y discografía detalladas. Salvo la entrevista, que aparece aquí solo en español, todo el contenido del libro es bilingüe. La versión bilingüe de la entrevista aparece en un libro aparte, A Summer Conversation/Conversación de verano (2025).

Aurelio de la Vega is no longer with us. Yet, his presence, calm and lucid voice, brilliant intellect, and ever-inquisitive gaze continue to dwell in my memory with an undiminished intensity. His passing leaves a void that is also an echo: the echo of a cherished friendship, of wise counsel, of the generous encouragement he always offered with the honesty of great spirits. The Maestro is gone—the universal composer, the literary critic of poetic sensibility, the lover of painting, and the mystery of art. But beyond titles, awards, and recognition—often more widely granted abroad than within his homeland—he was a man of light, coherent and transparent, who did not hesitate to leave his native land when he prophetically foresaw the dark face of totalitarianism approaching. And for that, they silenced him, erased him from official memory, as if decrees could erase the stature of a true creator. Yet his music transcended, his ideas blossomed, and his lucidity remained intact to the very end. It was a privilege for me to have known him, spoken with him, learned from his critical sensitivity, and felt his sincere appreciation for my writings. Now that he has gone to Glory, I feel him closer than ever, as if his spirit lingers among invisible notes, between the lines of a poem or the brushstroke of color on a canvas. Thank you, dear Aurelio, for all that you gave, for all that you were and forever will be. No exile is possible for your soul, for you now dwell in the eternity of truth.

Aurelio de la Vega ya no está entre nosotros, pero su presencia, su voz pausada y lúcida, su inteligencia brillante, y su mirada siempre inquisitiva, continúan habitando en mi memoria con una intensidad que no mengua. Su partida me deja un vacío que es también un eco: el eco de una amistad entrañable, del consejo sabio, del estímulo generoso que me ofreció siempre con la honestidad de los grandes espíritus. Se ha ido el Maestro, el compositor universal, el crítico literario de sensibilidad poética, el amante de la pintura y del misterio del arte. Pero más allá de sus títulos, de sus premios, de su reconocimiento —a menudo más amplio fuera de su patria que dentro de ella— se ha ido un hombre de luz, coherente y transparente, que no dudó en dejar atrás su tierra cuando vislumbró, con claridad profética, el rostro oscuro del totalitarismo que se avecinaba. Por eso también lo silenciaron, lo desterraron de la memoria oficial, como si pudieran borrar con decretos la estatura de un verdadero creador. Y sin embargo, su música trascendió, sus ideas florecieron, su lucidez se mantuvo intacta hasta el último momento. Fue un privilegio, para mí, haberlo conocido, haber conversado con él, haber aprendido de su sensibilidad crítica y haber sentido su aprecio sincero por mis escritos. Ahora que ha partido, de su gloria aquí en la Tierra, a la Gloria de Dios, lo siento más cerca que nunca, como si su espíritu anduviera entre notas invisibles, entre las líneas de un poema o el trazo de un color en la tela. Gracias, querido Aurelio, por todo lo que diste, por todo lo que fuiste y seguirás siendo. No hay exilio posible para tu alma, porque ya habitas en la eternidad de lo verdadero.
